The city was originally called Cote Gelee, which means ‘Frozen Hills.’ Founded in 1884 by Valsin Broussard, a direct descendant of Joseph Gaurhept Broussard de Beau Soleil, who was one of the first 200 Acadians to arrive in the state aboard the Santo Domingo in 1765, Broussard industries include food distributors, oil and gas service companies, manufacturing and real estate developments. Broussard real estate has grown from an area that contained numerous sugarcane plantations to the industrial city of today with a number of single-family homes and high rise apartments and complexes.

Residents of Broussard real estate are served by the Lafayette Parish School District and the St. Martin Parish School District. Broussard is the 85th largest community in the state and is a quiet community preferred by those who want to live in an area with a small town atmosphere located near the amenities of a large city. There are a variety of activities that may be enjoyed by residents including the Zoo of Acadiana. The zoo includes the Antelope Express Train Ride where deer, zebras, gibbons, exotic cats, primates and birds may be viewed.

The LeTriomphe Golf & Country Club, includes the Le Triomphe Course, which is a private course located in Broussard. Le Vieux Chenes Golf Course is in Youngsville, two miles from the center of Broussard. La Boulaie RV Park and Campground provides an outdoor adventure for residents and visitors. Acadiana Park Nature Station is located nearby and includes trails for riding. There are a few hills and thick wooded areas providing a challenging ride for all levels of riders.
